34th Inter Collegiate Model Parliament Competition was organized by YMCA in association with Rotary Bangalore Peenya on the 2nd and 3rd of November in YMCA. The first day was for Law College students and the second day was for the other Degree college students. How should parliamentarians conduct themselves? How does one keep the best traditions of democracy alive amidst the pressure of parliamentary politics?
The Model Parliament was held exactly as per the rules governing the conduct of the Lok Sabha.
Each student participant was thoroughly trained for a month in the whys and wherefores of parliamentary procedures, the question hour, the zero hour, the adjournment motions and presentation of bills and at each turn the participants were taught the difference between what happens in the parliament now and what ought to have been the conduct of the members of parliament.
The Model Lok Sabha lays great emphasis on energetic debates that follow strict rules of dignity and decorum. While the clever and the judicious use of words are preferred to the thumping of desks, a dignified exit of the opposition following the rejection of a no confidence motion is the norm than the slogan shouting and creating a ruckus in the well of the house.
At the end of the program awards were given to the “Best Parliamentarian, Best Party and Best speakers from each party”
Chief Guest for the inauguration was Smt. Sowmya Reddy, MLA Jayanagar. She shared her views about the present parliamentary and political system with the college students.
Mr. Vijayakumar.D - member of the Task Force Group & Dr. Mangala Gowri, Prof. SMRV College Bangalore were the judges. For Valedictory function, Rtn. Rajesh Hiremath, Youth Service Director of RID3190 was the chief guest. Around 280 students from 6 different colleges participated in the competition.
